Fritillaria pudica 'Richard Britten'

In response to Susans question here is a picture of Richard Britten fully open

Fritillaria pudica

Here is one of the wild types, you can see its about a week behind. When the wild type colors up I'll put them side by side so you can see the comparison .

Temps in the mid to upper 50's and a few spots of sun has been very nice!

Cheers,
Mark

Fritillaria pudica 'Richard Britten'

Pudica has always been one of my favorites since the days I spent botanizing up at Catherine creek in the Columbia River Gorge. This selection is amazing for its stout little golden bells larger than the wild types.

Temps in the 40's and pretty much everything is poking up just waiting for a touch of sunshine.

Cheers,
Mark

Floods and flowers

Narcissus romuixii 'Julia Jane'

Back from a great trip to the siskiyou chapter of NARGS....just in time to work 24/7 dealing with flooding issues in Salem. Fickle thing the weather, going from the driest year since 1892 to 2' of snow and inches of rain following.

I'm sitting in the greenhouse writing this, so I don't have the details on romuixii but this year I think I'm going to focus on the botanists and explorers who first found these bulbs and how they have enriched our growing experiences.

Fritillaria Olivier

This was the first frit of the season and even though it's barely poking its little flower cluster out of the soil it still counts. I'll probably write more on Guillarme Oliver because he was a physician and naturalist that explored in Iran and Turkey where lots of these bulbs come from. I know I didn't probably spell his name right, but this is just a little teaser of where I'm going with the blog this year.

48 degrees, pouring rain forecasted for tomorrow though today was mostly dry.

Cheers,

Going South.

Crocus

I'm headed to Medford tonight to give a talk entitled "growing hardy bulbs". Meeting is at the united Congregational church on e. Jackson at 7 pm.

I'm bringing a few flats of potted bulbs for sale. If you are in the area don't miss out!

2' of snow melting off today.

Warmer days ahead but rainy.

Cheers,

Mark
